Rodrigo y Gabriela Honor Late Tango Legend Astor Piazzolla’s 100 Year Birthday with Cover of “Oblivion”

In tribute to the late Astor Piazzolla, Grammy award-winning guitar virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela have released a special cover of his piece “Oblivion” as a celebration of his 100th birthday.

Astor Piazzolla and was an Argentinian tango composer/master, bandoneon player and arranger who passed away in 1992.  His work incorporating elements of jazz and classical musical styles into traditional tango helped to revolutionize what we know to be modern tango.

This new version features renowned Flamenco-guitar player Vicente Amigo, and is set to be featured on Rodrigo y Gabriela’s upcoming JAZZ EP with Rubyworks/ATO on May 14. Pre-orders and pre-save are currently available here.

The EP also features covers of Snarky Puppy’s “Lingus” and Kamasi Washington’s “Street Fighter Mas,” and the duo has plans for a release celebration livestream performance on May 14 with Dreamstage. More information and tickets for the livestream are available here.

Rodrigo y Gabriela last went on tour in the spring of 2019 soon after releasing their fifth studio album Mettavolution, also taking part in the Beale Street Music Festival that same year. The duo did a cover version of Piazzolla’s “Libertango” on their first live album in 2004.
