As reported by THEPRP, American rock duo Zombi continue their Zombie and Friends series with the release of a new cover of “Takin’ It To The Streets” by the Doobie Brothers. The guests that joined in on this track were Pinkish Black’s Daron Beck on vocals, Trans Am’s Phil Manley on guitar, The Sword’s Bryan Richie on bass and Zao’s Jeff Gretz. Zombi also have a new EP titled Liquid Crystal due out on May 14.
“Takin’ It To The Streets” was the title track off the Doobie Brothers sixth studio album, first released in 1976. The album was the first to feature Michael McDonald in the lead vocal role for the group, and the song itself was the first single off the album, so it would mark the primary point for which the new lineup of the group could be heard by listeners. The song is also notable because it is the brainchild of McDonald and would go on to peak at number thirteen on the US Billboard.
Zombi and Friends show no desire in reworking “Takin’ It To The Streets.” Everything that made this soulful and prosaic hit work is still here on their cover. While the arrangement veers off the most in the vocal styles of Beck’s vocals, it is clear he is still paying a homage to McDonald’s distinctive voice.
