American musician Richard Melville Hall, known professionally as Moby, shared a reworked version of single “The Lonely Night” featuring Kris Kristofferson and Mark Lanegan. It is the second single to be released thus far off his forthcoming album Reprise, which is due out May 28.
The song originally appeared on Moby’s 2013 album Innocents. Although some might consider this song to be an obscure pick for an album that collects highlights from the artists storied history, it has remained a favorite of Moby himself. The biggest adjustment made to the tune is its inclusion of orchestral sections made possible by Moby’s collaborative effort with the Budapest Art Orchestra. The original was heartbreaking, wrenchingly lugubrious, and arid. And while the emotional through line of the track endures, the added instrumentation and Kristofferson’s hauntingly frank vocals cross on the new reprisal version wonderfully, ostensibly filling in the chilling backdrop the original prepared.
Reprise, which is the artist’s nineteenth album to date, sees Moby revisiting musical highlights from his notable 30-year long career. Together with the Budapest Art Orchestra, it features re-envisioned classics and anthems with new arrangements that emphasizes orchestra and acoustic instruments. Along with Kristofferson and Lanegan, Reprise features an eclectic and impressive array of guests including Alice Skye, Amythyst Kiah, Apollo Jane, Darlingside, Deitrick Haddon, Gregory Porter, Jim James, Luna Li, Mindy Jones, Nataly Dawn, Novo Amor, Skylar Grey and Víkingur Ólafsson.
