National Geographic will be celebrating Earth Day with a virtual celebration that will feature performances from Rostam, Jose Gonzalez, Maggie Rogers, Aurora, My Morning Jacket, Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, Angelique Kidjo, Valerie June and more. The event will take place on April 21 starting at 8:30 p.m. EST, and will be viewable on National Geographic’s YouTube channel.
During the livestream, My Morning Jacket will be premiering a new music video. The event will be hosted by Jessica Nabongo, as well as National Geographical Explorers including Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Rae Wynn Grant, Lillygol Sedaghat and Dr. Lucy Hawkes.
The event will also feature an exclusive preview of the new four-part Disney+ series, Secrets of the Wales, which had been created by James Cameron. The new documentary will be narrated by Sigourney Weaver, and explores the social structure, culture and communication of whales.
“For over 133 years, National Geographic has strived to inspire people to care more deeply for the planet,” National Geographic Chairman, Garry Knell, said in a press statement. “This Earth Day, we hope to provide that inspiration with a one-of-a-kind celebration that invites audiences everywhere to unite around the power of music. Our Earth Day Eve event – virtual and accessible to everyone – will showcase environmentally passionate artists from around the world together with some of National Geographic’s most extraordinary Explorers. From AURORA’s forest performance in Bergen, Norway, to Jane Goodall’s greeting from her home in England, the celebration will give us even more of a reason to fall in love with the place we call home – and empower us to protect it.”
Willie Nelson recently released his album That’s Life in March, while Maggie Rogers shared her track “New Song” featuring Del Water Gap in December. Rostam’s most recent track had been “Changephobia,” which was released last week. Valerie June also released an album in March, sharing The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers.
