Alabama Shakes drummer Steve Johnson has been arraigned at Limestone County Courthouse in Athens, Alabama following his indictment on child abuse charges. The drummer will be released after he posts $26,500 in bond.

Johnson has maintained his innocence following the allegations, his lawyer, Nick Lough, saying, “Steve Johnson maintains his innocence on all of these allegations. And that’s what they are, allegations.”

“RIGHT NOW: Friends, family and supporters of Alabama Shakes drummer Steve Johnson pray outside the Limestone County Courthouse,” Luke Hajdasz of WAAY shared on Twitter. “Judge West granted bonds totaling $26,500 and he will be released later today after he posts, his lawyers say.”

The drummer had been arrested last week following an indictment for charges of “willful torture, willful abuse, and cruelly beating or otherwise willfully maltreating a child under the age of 18.”

Last year, Johnson had pled guilty to violating a domestic abuse violence protection order last year, which had been brought up by his ex-wife, who had alleged that Johnson harassed, and threatened her, and allegedly broke into her home. In 2019, a criminal complaint against Johnson that had been dismissed alleged he had hit his son with a belt, causing bruises on his buttocks and thighs.

The Alabama Shakes had gone on hiatus in 2018, due to the lead singer, Brittany Howard, choosing to focus on her solo career.
