The Flaming Lips are fresh off a series of “Space Bubble” concerts at The Criterion in Oklahoma City, which allowed attendees to experience a unique live performance inside large plastic bubbles. The band was initially set to head on tour earlier this year, with a stop in Los Angeles at The Wiltern on January 25, 2021. The tour will pick up again this summer with a new Wiltern Theater date of August 20, 2021. The band released their most recent album, American Head in September 2020. Prior to the album’s release, the band shared a socially-distanced video for their song “Mother Please Don’t Be Sad.”
The Flaming Lips are known for their over-the-top performances, often featuring frontman Wayne Coyne crowdsurfing in a clear hamster ball at some point during the show. Seeing them perform their 1999 breakthrough album The Soft Bulletin at the last Desert Daze festival did not disappoint, so it’s safe to say their Wiltern show will be a real treat.
The Flaming Lips are known for their experimental yet accessible sound and writing style, and it’s a lot of fun pouring through their extensive discography. Several of their albums have won Grammy Awards as well as Album of the Year in publications, making them one of the most beloved bands in the alternative rock world. They’ve also collaborated with artists including pop star Miley Cyrus on her experimental album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. They also released an album earlier this year with Deap Valley titled Deap Lips, appropriately. They’ve also released collaborations with Neon Indian, Henry Rollins and Lightning Bolt, among others.
