Album Review: Poppy – A Very Poppy Christmas EP

A heavy dose of creative holiday music

‘Tis the season for magic and happiness, as Boston native Poppy releases her holiday album A Very Poppy Christmas EP. Although the record is a short one, each track is filled with honest emotions as Poppy uses her soft and delicate vocals to help set the mood on each track. This piece is different from a traditional holiday album because Poppy uses plenty of creativity to make an EP that gives an insight of what Christmas looks like through her mind. A Very Poppy Christmas EP shows how people can view the holiday season in their own way.

The saddening “I Won’t Be Home For Christmas” is a heartbreaker because the lyrics of the tune detail the sad story of a broken relationship. “Who created all this distance?/ And I know you’re missing me/ I don’t know where I’ll be/ But I won’t be home for Christmas.” These lyrics show how Poppy wants to be with that person, but at the same time, she is protecting her heart because she knows the relationship is broken all the same.

Cutesy “Kiss in The Snow’’ is a fun tune because Poppy sings in melody about falling in love with someone during the holiday season. Poppy’s vocals are lovely by how low she is able to sing the lyrics, and the tender sound of her vocals brings the emotion of wanting to be with someone and being able to create special memories with them. It has been said that love does exist during the holiday season, and through Poppy’s beautiful vocal style, people can experience what falling in love feels like during this wonderful season.

Sentimental “Silver Bells” has always been a holiday favorite, and Poppy does a great job with her version of the tune because the sound of her acoustic guitar and voice brings the magical feeling of the holiday season in a joyful way. What is noticeably good about this composition is how the musical structure is the same as the original version. When an artist covers a popular Christmas song, people want to hear some of the familiar sounds from the original version, and Poppy does a great job with staying attuned with the original style of “Silver Bells.”

Christmas music is cherished by millions of people around the world, and A Very Poppy Christmas EP offers a different view of this holiday season with how Poppy uses her low and tender voice to create a different style of music that can still leave listeners feeling merry and bright.
