Adam Goren, the mastermind behind Atom and His Package has released a cover of They Might Be Giants’ “Boat of Car,” which premiered on his They Might Be Giants fan podcast This Might Be A Podcast. The podcast can be found here, while his cover of the song is available on Bandcamp for free and can be found below. This track was originally featured on the 1986 EP Other Thing Brass Band.
Goren’s take on “Boat of Car” is a brief experimental reworking of the song, replacing its synths with a jazz keyboard, while retaining the track’s eclectic power pop aesthetics. Like the original, it builds up into a more rock oriented sound, with heavier chords and indie rock vocals.
This latest cover follows Goren’s performance of John Linnell’s “Montana” alongside Greg Simpson, which was also included during an episode of This Might Be A Podcast. Linnell is best known as one-half of They Might Be Giants, but he released a hefty amount of solo work during the mid ’90s.
Goren retired Atom and His Package in 2004, but he has revived the project during a couple of live performances back in 2008 and in 2017. He was also busy with the punk cover band called TV Casualty, who released a self-titled collection of six Misfits covers on vinyl back in 2011. He is also a member of the punk outfit Armalite, who released a studio album in 2004 and a three song EP in 2011. His work with Atom and His Package is known for its references to numerous alternative punk and power pop scenes from the 1980s and 1990s.
