LA’s Nightjacket are a dream-pop quintet who debuted a brand new singer and single in May of this year. The band shared their single “Lonely Archer” which featured the fresh vocals of new singer Andrea Wasse. The song will be on Nightjacket’s forthcoming new EP The Curve, which may be a departure from the bands’ heavier, shoegaze sound. The song brings to mind dreamy acts like Mazzy Star and Beach House, featuring acoustic strumming and Wasse’s ethereal vocals.
Take a listen to “Lonely Archer” here and get ready for a subtle build:
“The original demo we sent to Andrea for ‘Lonely Archer’ was similar to the final recording musically and in terms of mood, but you wouldn’t recognize it now, melodically or lyrically,” guitarist Jordan Wiggins said in an interview earlier this year. “In fact, it had a different title and completely different lyrics. Andrea took it to another level. She wrote the lyrics and melody and brought them in the first time we all met with her at Louie Schultz’s (multi-instrumentalist) studio in Eagle Rock. It’s a vulnerable position to be in, to be meeting with a band for the first time and then to deliver these really heartfelt emotions the way she did. We were blown away.”
Their new EP The Curve should have arrived on September 25th, but I wasn’t able to find it on streaming sites or their Bandcamp. It’s definitely something to keep your eyes peeled for!
Nightjacket’s debut studio album Beauty In The Dark was produced by Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo) and mixed by James Krausse (Beyonce). Their former singer Holland Belle brings her classically opera-trained vocals to the mix and captures the essence of intense love and relationships. In fact, while they were first recording the album, Belle ended up leaving the project for a while to follow her heart to Berlin. The band completed the project upon her return, no doubt with a broken-hearted Belle.
Listen to the pop-y single “Waking Up With You,” which features an airy, young and in love vibe:
“Ooh, waking up with you / There’s beauty in the dark / I wanted to forget my heart,” Bells voice urges the listener to sing along in the catchy chorus.
Nightjacket’s music video for the 2015 song “The Right Way To Fall” allows us to watch the band perform on a windy Donwtown LA rooftop. The song is off their first EP, Eternal Phase, and incorporates sounds of Americana, country and dreamy ’80s. Watch it here:
