Dance Gavin Dance is a band that is hard to pin down in the best kind of way. Listening to one of their tracks is sure to take you down a road of unexpected keys, vocals, and pace. However, this unpredictability is sure to be the aspect of Dance Gavin Dance that really draws you in. The combined clean and unclean vocals of lead singers Tilian Peterson and John Mess be soothing you in one instant, and screaming at you in the next; the pace and intricate layers of instrumental production reflect this beautiful chaos. Although Dance Gavin Dance has been called a post-hardcore band, they take influence from math rock, jazz fusion, and emo. If there is one thing that is consistent about Dance Gavin Dance, is it’s the ability to deliver tracks as you’ve never heard before.
Dance Gavin Dance formed in 2005 by guitarist Will Swan and drummer Mathew Mingus after recruiting their lead John Mess. Soon after they released their debut EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean. Their debut studio album was released in 2007 titled Downtown Battle Mountain, inspired by a unique town in Nevada. Their 3rd studio album Happiness saw developments in their sound, incorporating Funk Rock, and experimentalism. Their 6th studio album Instant Gratification released in 2015 saw much critical success and the band’s growth over a decade.
Their latest album released this year is Afterburner, featuring their hit Prisoner. Be sure to hear Afterburner live next year!
