Belgian band Front 242 has been a monumental figure and pioneer in the electronic music scene, the band itself coined the genre “Electronic Body Music”. Started in 1981 by Daniel Bressanutti and Derk Bergan, who wanted to combine graphic design and music, while innovating with the new electronic equipment of the 80s. They were then joined by Patrick Codenys and vocalist Jean-Luc De Meyer, who lent a riveting and hypnotic singing style to the band. Together they live produced pulsating sequences that inspired a new kind of dance movement. Their mastery of electronic equipment and creative visuals opened the door for experimentation. Front 242 proved to be highly influential in both Europe and America.
Front 242 produced their first self-released album Geography in 1983 which became very popular in the European club scene. Their next album, No Comment tied “Electronic Body Music” to their name, and formed it as a genre. Their album Front by Front released in 1988 contained their single Headhunter and is regarded as important work in the industrial and electronic scene. Their 5th album Tyranny (For You) broke them into commercial space in America. Their albums 06:21:03:11 Up Evil and 05:22:09:12 Off took the band in a different direction artistically, with softer vocals from De Meyer. Their most recent album is their 2003 release Pulse. Many members of the band have also been involved in numerous side projects contributing their talents.
Front 242 is a must-see in terms of historical importance, and stylish music that still holds up today. Be sure to see them live next year!
