Tokyo-based composer, producer, writer and singer Shintaro Sakamoto is heading on a mini-tour next summer. He’ll be stopping in Los Angeles at the Fonda Theatre on June 13, 2021.
Sakamoto began his career in 1989 as a singer and guitarist of the Japanese rock band Yura Yura Teikoku. Over their 21 years together, YYT released 10 albums but disbanded in 2010. Since then, Sakamoto launched his solo career and Zelone Records, his very own record label. His solo sound is a departure from YYT’s psychedelic and garage rock, and is more soft and subtle in style.
His 2012 debut album How to Live With a Phantom was considered an “otherworldly folk-pop masterpiece” and allowed him to gain notoriety outside YYT and Japan. In an interview with The Japan Times, Sakamoto said “I was under the impression that people in the U.S. who listened to Japanese music were interested in things that were really extreme — strange, experimental avant-garde or psychedelic stuff,” sharing how surprised he was to receive solo success via his newfound subtle sound. Sakamoto saw even more success as his second solo album Let’s Dance Raw reached #2 on Billboard’s World Chart. His third studio album Love if Possible was released in 2017, followed by a split 7-inch single with Devendra Banhart.
