Album Review: Second Arrows – Second Arrows

New album brings style

New Jersey band Second Arrows have released their debut album Second Arrows and it is filled with heavy metalcore music. Deadguy guitarist and vocalist Crispy Corvino’s vocals are powerful with how he shouts out the lyrics. Former Every Time I Die guitarist Chris Byrnes, Esign guitarist Dan Brennan and The Banner guitarist Pete August play ear-bleeding guitar notes and Deadguy drummer Chris Ross lights the background with his erratic drum beats. Second Arrows, with their impressive background, have outdone themselves with their first record.

Blazing “Jitters” is a piece crafted by how the band performs together. At the beginning, the electrifying guitar playing from Byrnes and Brennan introduces listeners to the wilder side of the band. August’s bass guitar riffs are nice and steady while Ross’s drum beats are exciting to hear because he adds more energy while his bass drum pedal smacks repeatedly. Listening to Carvino sing the lyrics is satisfying because his vocal style holds the band together while he shrieks and shouts the words. If listeners want to hear a song that will cause their speakers and veins to vibrate, “Jitters” can fulfill that expectation.

Crazy  “Galactic” is a prime example of how Corvino’s vocals impact the album. While listening, it is nice to hear how high his vocal range can go because the higher Corvino sings, the more emotional feeling of desperation can be felt through his vocal madness. What is noticeably good about Corvino’s talent is how he is capable of shrieking and shouting out the lyrics in musical fashion. When the clashing noises are heard, the elements create an upbeat vibe that keeps the music moving throughout the song. “Galactic” is a crafted composition.

Thunderous “Our Grendel” bleeds gifted bass guitar playing. The whole band is jamming quite well on this track, but it is August’s guitar notes that shine brightly through the whole piece. The rapidly low riffs are being played on a consistent musical structure which compliments the other guitar riffs played by Byrnes and Brennan. August does a fine job with maintaining the same musical pace with the rest of the musicians because his high energetic performance can be felt throughout the track. “Our Grendel” is a beautiful piece of music.

Fast paced “One Tonne Temple Bell” is a catchy jam due to how Ross plays the drum. His drumming style is righteous because he stays on a steady musical pattern through the middle of the song and when the music is close to the end, Ross transitions smoothly to a lighter and softer tempo to let listeners know the ending is near. Also, Ross’s talent blends in well with the rest of the band because he has the ability to create louder havoc while performing music. “One Tonne Temple Bell” is a great piece of work.

Vengeful “Thornes” has a creative meaning behind it because the title is referenced towards the horror movie “Damien: Omen II” and Second Arrows added the ‘e’ in “Thornes” to recognize the influential ’80s metal band named Damien Thorn. Other than the meaning behind the title, the music is empowered with a wide range of musical sound and experiences from the band. Second Arrows shines brightly on this piece.

Second Arrows is a great debut album and all five band members have done a wonderful job with creating worthy music.
