OSHUN is an up-and-coming, powerful all-female duo making waves in the music industry. Composed of two 19-year-old NYU students, Niambi Sala and Thandiwe, OSHUN is a tribute to the beautiful African culture. With the duo’s name, Oshun, rooted in Yoruba tradition. The duo initially started the collective as a way to empower women and all people as well as instill cultural pride. They themselves classify their music as powerful lya-soul, a mixture of neo-soul and hip-hop. Their debut EP, AFAHYE, was released in 2014, and OSHUN also toured the East Coast, performing in many major cities.
OSHUN is a wonderful collective combining elements of the past, present, and future. Through all of their meaningful content, OSHUN strives to invoke the 90s and 2000s nostalgia while also embracing the elements of culture lost as those of the younger generations further immerse themselves in American society. Follow OSHUN on their rise to stardom. And be sure to check out OSHUN at Brick & Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco on October 23rd.
