Flesh Panthers @ Schubas Tavern (8/7)

You can’t discuss the garage-punk rock scene of Chicago without mentioning the Flesh Panthers. They’ve been participating non-stop as a DIY band all over Chicago, performing intimate shows, with mosh pits right in front. They started out with a loud punk rock style to fit the spaces they played in, but over the years they have developed their sound into a more mellow rock and roll, sometimes peppered with a little country for fun, but excitement in their tunes absolutely remains. They perform fan favorite covers, but also have a wide range of their own original music.

The band first started around 2014, with their self titled album. Then in 2015 they came out with their next album, Ngc 2632, full of their quintessential loud punk style, and featuring their song Teethe. In 2016 they produced their album, Willows Weep, which saw their move to more mellow rock, and featured their song Last I Heard, which had a slight country twang. Their newest album, Holy Roller came out just this year, which continues the ideas of their adapted sound.

Flesh Panthers is an essential part of the culture of Chicago’s music scene. If you’re a Chicago resident, or even from out of town, you’ll want to initiate yourself into their sound.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
