Poetic, enriching, and intent on meaning, Braids is a three person art rock band bent on pushing the idea of what music is supposed to be for us. Beginning their music career from a young age, the band formed from friends in high school in Calgary, Canada. They gained success from combining the hypnotic vocals of their lead singer, Raphaelle Standell-Preston, and their creative lyrics which won them competitions. The name of the band, Braids, is put by member Austin Tuffs as being reflective of their “interwoven and interlaced style”.
Their debut album, Native Speaker, deals with lead singer Raphaelle’s experience with becoming a young adult and moving to Montreal; the album gave them the label of an avant-garde rock band. Their next album Flourish // Perish, experiments with combining naturalist and electronic sounds. Their latest album, which came out very recently on June 19, 2020, is called Shadow offering.
