The Minneapolis hip-hop community has recently faced some turmoil. Artists like Prof and Dem Atlas were dropped from their label after accusations, which were not specified by the label, were made against them. Meanwhile, rapper P.O.S of the Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree was the subject of deeply personal video made by his Doomtree bandmate and former significant-other Dessa.
Now another rapper from the scene, Astronautalis aka Andy Bothwell, who is not a member of Doomtree but raps alongside P.O.S as a part of the duo Four Fists, has faced allegations of abusive behavior. Recently, he admitted to some of the allegations on social media. He first admitted to the allegations of gaslighting and emotional abuse against his former girlfriend KT Endgahl. She first posted the allegations on social media Engdahl on social media.
“I did emotionally abuse and gaslight KT Engdahl for years,” he wrote regarding her accusation. “She cared a great deal about me, offered up an infinite well of kindness and friendship, and in return, I walked all over her. When I hurt her, I either convinced her the way she felt was wrong, or weaseled my way through some half assed apology, but I never fulled owned up to what I had done and what I was doing to her.”
“I really didn’t want to come out. I really don’t want to be reliving my trauma all fucking over again. But there are no passes for this shit,” Engdahl wrote. “That ‘statement’ was a joke. It was cruel to the MANY womxn he’s hurt. I am still trying to rebuild myself. 10 years after meeting him I’m still trying to pull the pieces of myself back together. Still trying to teach myself that I am a worthy human being. To all of the survivors—I hear you. I see you. I believe you. I’m sorry for the ways I failed you. We all deserved & deserve so much fucking better.”
He also does not deny any of the accusation of an anonymous second woman. She alleged a disturbing encounter with Bothwell on Instagram. She alleges that Bothwell committed sexual assault against her after the two took MDMA together. Bothwell acknowledged the incident, stating: “When I read the account for the anonymous woman on Instagram, I was mortified. To have such disregard for her feelings, to be so blind to her fear in the moment, I was appalled to read that and recognize myself in those words. There is no explaining the way I behaved, there is no excuse for treating a human being like that.”
Consequence of Sound has also released a statement indicating that Andy Bothwell aka Astronautalis would no longer work with the company, specifically mentioning Consequence of Sound, Consequence Media and Consequence Podcast in the statement. Bothwell hosted The Opus on CoS’s podcast network.
