Catch Electronic Artist Squarepusher Live at 1720 12/12

Electronic artist Squarepusher, aka Tom Jenkinson, is heading on an international tour this fall in support of his latest EP release Lamental. He’s making a stop in Los Angeles at 1720 on December 12. His particular brand of electronic music has been described as “manic, schizoid, experimental drum ‘n’ bass with a heavy progressive jazz influence.” His first full-length album Feed Me Weird Things was produced by Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label and featured fast jungle breaks, Aphex-style synths and instrumentals he recorded himself.

As the son of a jazz drummer, Jenkinson’s music is heavily influenced by jazz as he grew up listening to performers like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. He’s also influenced by dub pioneers such as Augustus Pablo and King Tubby. As his interest in techno music developed, he started making music that turned out to be an amalgam of his influences. To add to his list of unique interests, he’s dabbled in robotics too, assisting a Japanese team with the creation of music-playing robots called Z-Machines.

His latest EP is more subdued than previous releases, such as his drill-n-bass forward 15th album Be Up a Hello. Check out his live performance and see where he’s headed next!
