Yunalis binti Mat Zara’ai, better known by her stage name Yuna, is a Malaysian singer-songwriter best known for her rise from MySpace popularity, reaching over a million plays, to mainstream success. Having had a passion for music from a young age, even beginning songwriting at age fourteen, Yuna began performing her music live as a creative outlet for her stress from law school. However, what began as just a fun side hobby soon launched into a full-blown career as she released her self-titled EP, Yuna, to great acclaim and multiple nominations for Malaysian Music Awards. Since then, Yuna has released three more international studio albums, two EPs, and three Malaysian albums.
Yuna’s success has not just been concentrated in Asia, however. After the release of her first album, Yuna entered the international spotlight and has begun to pursue a musical career in the U.S. that has been successful. Yuna has garnered attention from Billboard, Lollapalooza, Rolling Stone Magazine, and was the first Malaysian to be nominated for a BET Award. On July 18th, Yuna will be coming to the Bay Area to perform at Yoshi’s, an Oakland venue known for its relaxed setting. Be sure to catch Yuna on her Bay Area date, and follow Mxdwn for more music updates.
