Magical forest atmosphere for spirituality and relaxation
Conference of Trees, the new album by Pantha Du Prince, is one that spews spirituality. In tying together an assortment of random and unexpected instruments, along with the ominous melodies and tones that accompany them, the album sets the vibe of a magical forest. After the iridescent twinkling and soft introduction of the first song, the audience most likely will not know what to expect with the rest of the album, and each song has a slightly different mood and feeling. Going through the course of the album will surely bring about a range of emotions in the listener, as well as thoughts, as this type of music is known to spark deeper thinking.
Although the overall tone is slow and almost strewn together in wisps, there certainly is a time and a place for this album. Most individuals would not select Conference of Trees for their long car rides on an open road or jam sessions with the homies, but these instrument-heavy vibes would be perfect for a solo class of kundalini yoga or relaxing in the sun. If one is open to spirituality and awakening this side of them, then the listener can surely find meaning and feeling behind the noise. Although the music might confuse people at first impression, after listening to a few songs it can easily grow onto someone. The title of the album is well-suited also, for the facets of melody sewn together sound almost like the whisper of trees in a forest. It really has a magical forest vibe and presence. It is representing a conversation, or conference, between the trees.
Each song had a unique ensemble of instruments and ominous melodies. Each mood was different from the one previously. The song “When We Talk” is particularly powerful and trippy, with a heavy drum beat as well as omnipresent vocals. The song directly following it, “Roots Making Family,” has a catchy beat line and is completely different from its former. It sounds almost jazzy, but not without the weird collection of instrumentals. This part brings in a very tribal feel and aura to the tune, one that is carried throughout the entire album.
Overall, the whole album truly comes across like it could be used in a spiritual festival or ceremony; perhaps it was created for this purpose!
