A full orchestra is somewhat of a rarity these days. Most people are no longer raised on classical music so by and large, our cultural education on that side of the musical spectrum is less than ideal, though it has been bolstered in other areas. Luckily, there are musicians who have that cultural education who are willing to share it with the rest of us.
It should come as no surprise that James Blake, of all musicians, is the one who is going to perform with an orchestra. The relatively minimalist British R&B/soul superstar has always shown a proclivity towards unique and engaging sound structures, so it was only a matter of time until he dove headfirst into the world of orchestra backing.
It’s always an exciting prospect to hear an artist heading in a bold new direction. Given the usual sparsity of Blake’s production, the idea that a full orchestra is going to be used presents new and interesting sound challenges to look forward to.
While I can’t predict what the setlist might look like, there’s no doubt that whatever he plays will leave an indelible mark on his future compositions, so this is likely the best chance we have at hearing the future of James Blake and his music. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this one.
