Album Review: In This Moment – Mother

New album brings meaning

Metal band In This Moment are back with a new record, Mother. This album is great because it proves how the band is not afraid to try different styles of music. The instrumentation is energetic and the vocals are clear on each track. Also, the band did a great job creating their own versions of two classic rock songs. Overall, In This Moment did a fantastic job on this composition.

The song “Lay Me Down” is superb because of how Maria Brink’s voice shines on the track. Brink’s vocals are filled with raw emotions while singing lyrics that are telling an emotional story. Also, the vocal range is amazing because of how Brink is able to harmonize the lyrics perfectly. By paying attention to the music, she can be heard crooning to the music in the background. In This Moment does a great job of showing how powerful they are as a band and they are not shy about showing their true colors.

“Hunting Grounds” is another wonderful tune because the guitar playing by Chris Howorth fills the track with electric riffs. When listening, it is amusing how smooth Howorth changes guitar notes to add depth to this melodic piece. If listeners want to have goosebumps on their arms, “Hunting Grounds” can fulfill that expectation.

The “Fly Like an Eagle” cover is well done and the band really came together to create and perform their own version of the timeless classic. The adaptation stands out from the original because of the dark and gloomy theme. The instrument playing creates the feeling of wanting to break free from a moment some people are stuck in. It truly does feel like In This Moment wants listeners to embrace freedom.  If fans want to feel a sense of creativity on this album, “Fly Like an Eagle” can satisfy their needs.

“Legacy” is phenomenal because the delivery of the music speaks for itself. In This Moment played together brilliantly based off how well the musical and vocal elements blend in together to create a deeper meaning. In some ways, people can relate to this song because it does feel like the lyrics are about losing a close friend or loved one. “Legacy” is an absolute hit and the band did a good job of setting a theme consisting of a fresh heartache.

Another cover done was “We Will Rock You” and it is a home run on this record, not only because Izzy Hale and Taylor Momsen sing with Brink, but how the band carried themselves to create their own version. While listening to the song, Bink’s, Hale’s and Momsen’s voices impact the whole track by how all three women use their ranges to create a personal feeling and statement. Also what is noticeably likable is how the instrument playing stays true to the original. The drum and guitar playing are vibrant with the sound of thunder. If listeners want a song to blow their minds, “We Will Rock You” will do that by using the combination of rock and metal music.

In This Moment should be proud of the hard work they have done to make Mother and fans will not be disappointed.
