Some genres will never go out of style. Both Coheed and Cambria, and Chon find themselves squarely in possession of two things that will always be appreciated, virtuosic guitar playing and completely unhinged storylines.
In the early 2000s Coheed and Cambria got famous for their breakout track “Welcome Home” but they should have been a household name long before that. Headed by frontman Claudio Sanchez, Coheed and Cambria has always used music as a vehicle for a story. Each album is part of a lengthy sci-fi epic that has evolved from a single album into an entire discography and a book dedicated to it’s lore. But while the music is always in service of the story, that doesn’t mean their music gets the short end of the stick. Coheed and Cambria has long been appreciated for their unhinged instrumentals and soaring vocals, something that hasn’t changed since the very beginning. In fact they’ve only gotten better.
Chon, on the other hand, has no interest in weaving a narrative. A post-hardcore group in the vein of Dance Gavin Dance and Closure In Moscow, the guitar is king to Chon. The group is focused entirely on creating indelible licks and smooth grooves in order to hold the attention of their audiences. After a few short years, Chon has become a defining name in the crossover of post-hardcore and math rock, and they do not disappoint live.
Just when you thought this show couldn’t possibly get any better, you realize it’s at the Wiltern, one of the most iconic venues in Los Angeles. Having seen a few math rock and post-hardcore bands at the Wiltern myself, I can promise you that they will absolutely nail this. Get your tickets fast, you won’t be disappointed.
