Paul Banks’ Not-So-New Band Muzz Releases Video for Solemn New Song “Broken Tambourine”

The lead vocalist of Interpol Paul Banks, producer, multi-instrumentalist and one third of Bonny Light Horseman Josh Kaufman and Matt Barrick the drummer for the outfits Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Walkmen have joined forces as Muzz, a group which officially originated in 2015. The band have released an original new track titled “Broken Tambourine,” which was accompanied by an animated music video directed and animated by Griffin Frazen, and produced by Banks, who formed the original idea for the video.

“Broken Tambourine” takes place in the isolating realm of space, and opens up with a shot of some captions stating Good Morning, which are reflected in an astronauts visor. The area is shown as vast and empty, perfectly matching the track. The song is filled with an assortment of strings, pianos, guitars and drums, giving it a bit of a psychedelic pop feel, backed by Banks somber vocal performance, which perfectly captures the loneliness and beauty of the cosmos.

Muzz has deep roots within the band members’ personal histories as Banks and Kaufman were high school friends who met Barrick independently on some of their side ventures. Barrick drummed alongside Banks for The RZA, Banks + Steelz collaborative project and some of Kaufman’s production work, while Kaufman performed alongside Banks for some of Julian Plenti’s early work.

Inperpol’s most recent EP release A Fine Mess came out last year. “Interpol’s A Fine Mess is quite literally a fine mess, with tracks worth listening to on repeat but also missed opportunities where the band played it safe,” mxdwn reviewer Elle Henriksen explained. “Interpol’s best cards are played when their whole deck is laid out flat–for listeners to hear their originality through and through.”
