Some bands are built to make you party. Diplo for instance, always puts on an amazing show. It’s a room full of people who wouldn’t want to be anywhere else and they’re all just blasted out of their skulls. Party music has its place, and the best party music is often treated with the reverence it deserves. But there is a special place for great somber music, even if it never breaks into the mainstream. Whatever that place is, it appears that Nick Cave has found it, and as proof he’s headlining a once in a lifetime show at the Staples Center.

Nick Cave and Weyes Blood are not the artists you’d expect to be headlining the Staples Center. These artists are certainly popular (see location of this show for evidence) but Staples is often reserved for the ultra popular pop and rap stars these days. But it seems that Cave has made the rare crossover to being an indie rock stadium act.

That this concert is coming on the heels of his magnificent and heartbreaking Ghosteen is all the more shocking. The record, brilliant though it may be, is not exactly Stadium fare. But in this instance it seems as though the quality was too great to ignore.

Accompanying Cave is the ever spectacular Weyes Blood who is hot off the release of the sublime Titanic Rising. While she may still be somber compared to the typical Staples Center performer her inclusion on the bill will help to add a boost of energy to what is likely to be a tear filled night.

Given the rarity of events like these this show is an absolute must see. It’s likely to be the best thing Staples Center sees this year, well… unless the Lakers take it all home.
