Sometimes the best thing for grieving someone is to remember what made them great. As we mentioned yesterday, L.A. is currently grieving the loss of Kobe Bryant, a man who is quite arguably the greatest sports star ever from a city full of incredible sports stars. But on 3/15 at the El Rey, the grieving in Los Angeles will be of a different kind when the amazing venue celebrates the life and legacy of Kim Shattuck of the Muffs.
Shattuck left behind an amazing legacy, and much like the aforementioned athlete was taken from the world tragically and far too soon. But in the face of such tragedy it helps to look back on what she gave to the world. Throughout her time in The Muffs and The Coolies (and The Pandoras, The Beards, briefly the Pixies, and more) she not only pushed the boundaries of music but helped to serve as an inspiration for countless young women who wanted to pursue a career in rock music.
The lineup includes Redd Kross, Veruca Salt, that dog., Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Kathy Valentine (The Go-Go’s), Rob Zabrecky (Possum Dixon), Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), Honeychain (fronted by current Pandoras member Hillary Burton whose 2017 debut album was produced by Kim), sets from Kim’s bands The Pandoras and The Coolies, and her Muffs bandmates Ronnie Barnett and Roy Mcdonald (who are also hosting).
To have so many people mourn you after you are gone goes to show the impact that she had in the industry. Proceeds from the benefit support the ALS Association Golden West Chapter to help continue the fight against the disease that took Shattuck’s life.
