Brittany Howard Brings Blues Back to the Palladium

There’s a lot of genres and styles of music that are effectively “dead” to the common populous. At the very least they could be described as dormant. Stuff like Jazz, Classical, and Blues rarely garners enough attention to make any impact in popular culture unless it is co-opted by someone else who works in musical stylings far more popular. This is functionally different from experimental genres which have never been widely popular, so the measure of their vitality is based more off of innovation than interest. However, in recent years we’ve seen a return of blues and soul and perhaps no single artist has been more important to this movement than Brittany Howard.

Howard, best known for her time as the frontwoman of Grammy Award winning group Alabama Shakes, doesn’t play by the standard rules of the music industry, but always comes out a winner anyway. There’s one reason as to why, talent. Howard has the voice of an angel, it’s truly one of the voices of our generation, and the topics upon which she chooses to sing are deeply important.

Her most recent solo record Jaime touched on topics as common as loving ones own home and a desire to return to it, or even just a love of getting high, but also dove into topics of race politics and police brutality in the same breath, which painted a moving portrait of the subjects that have affected Howard throughout her life.

Couple this with the fact that Howard is known as a phenomenal performer with or without Alabama Shakes and then plop her into the most important venue in Hollywood and it’s clear that you’ve got a winning combination.
