I don’t need to introduce you to Coldplay do I? They’re pretty inarguably one of the most popular bands on the face of the planet, and while they may have become the butt of more than a few jokes given their relaxed, sad sound, they’re still one of the most important musical acts around and in one week they’re bringing their sound to the Hollywood Palladium for one night only.
In some regards Coldplay is an excellent Los Angeles band. Hear me out, I can already sense you crying out that “No LA is a punk city, it’s a hip hop city its.” yeah yeah I know. But spiritually LA is a place that doesn’t care, it’s probably the least sincere city in the world, and when people aren’t thinking about work, they’re painfully relaxed (need I remind you that Cali sober is an actual term that people use). There is not a single band more relaxing or low stakes than Coldplay. Sure, back in the day when they were releasing records like X&Y, Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and Viva La Vida they were decently liked critically, which is something that cannot be said for their later output, but they were never a band that felt urgent. They were a band that sept into the public consciousness as if through osmosis, eventually diving full thrust into the pleasure center of our brain which whispered to us “you know, this is pretty damn good.”
Our brains were right. Decades later, Coldplay remains on top of the world. They’re among the only bands to come out of that mid aughts time period who haven’t totally collapsed into obscurity and they seem to be happy just trotting the globe making low stakes, comfortable music. I have no doubt in my mind that their show at the Palladium will be an excellent night out for those who attend, the only urgency might be the rush to grab a ticket.
