It has been a little over a week since Justin Bieber’s latest single “Yummy” dropped to mixed reviews, and despite respectable appearance on both domestic and international charts, JB doesn’t appear satisfied, or at least whoever runs his Instagram doesn’t appear to be.
The Canadian popstar reposted a fan account’s guide to gaming platforms like Spotify and iTunes last week in order to boost the new single. According to The Verge, the five-panel Instagram post was put up last Thursday with the caption:
“Justin really wants that #1 and he is really excited about it as he said yesterday in his livestream. If you don’t want to do any of this it’s totally fine, just ignore the post. ✌️This is tips for the people who actually wants to do an extra effort!”
The guide instructs fans on Spotify to create a playlist with “Yummy” on it, and play that on repeat on a low volume while they sleep. It also goes so far as to encourage international fans to purchase a VPN and set that to the U.S. to boost the song’s numbers domestically. For non-Spotify users, the post instructs fans to purchase the song on iTunes, and then purchase it multiple times on Bieber’s website.
Bieber’s official account reposted the guide later that night and has since deleted it.
This is not exactly the first time that fans have attempted to manipulate the system to garner higher numbers for their favorite artists.
As of Sunday evening, neither Bieber nor his representatives have publicly commented on the posts.
