Kiesza Debuts Sugary Alt-Pop Song “When Boys Cry”

Kiesza the Canadian artist just released a new single, “When Boys Cry” through her own label Zebra Spirit Tribe. The song was produced by her longtime collaborator Chris Malinchak and according to a statement the track, “bolsters its strong message between minimal beats, the whisper of a snare, and quick-flitting snaps as Kiesza sing-speaks about boys who let their ‘teardrops turn to rust.’” Kiesza has sent out teasers via Twitter to promote the new track, using phrases from the song like, “Oh boys try to tell the world, that they’re fine, but boys lie, their tears fall between line.” In another tweet, she shared lyrics, “Teardrops turning into rust, still your eyes are saying so much, the truth is hiding in dust.”

The song has a meaningful yet light impact as her vocals come through in a piercing fashion before the pop beat breaks in. The beats set against the rhythm and groove set the theme, and the track lays down the hook, “When Boys Cry, Boys Cry, gotta learn what to see in their dry eyes, dry eyes. And you may have to listen through, gritted teeth, gritted teeth. Because you don’t always see it when, Boys Cry, Boys Cry.”

Kiezsa says about the song, “Throughout history, men have had less permission to be vulnerable about their feelings. I want to empower men to tap into the “feminine” energy they have within and allow themselves to be emotional without judgement. I wrote the melody and lyrics of “When Boys Cry” with the intention of encouraging men to feel confident sharing this side of themselves with the world, and encourage people to celebrate it when they do.”

After a life-changing car crash put her on a two-year hiatus, Kiesza returned as an independent artist, releasing music through her own label Zebra Spirit Tribe. The new decade marks a promising new beginning for one of the last decade’s biggest breakouts and this time, she’s doing it her way. Re-emerging as an independent musician and staking her claim in the electro-pop scene, Kiesza ended 2019 by releasing two new singles, “Sweet Love” and “You’re The Best” via her label Zebra Spirit Tribe.

Kiesza‘s 2014 hit “Hideaway” accrued over billion streams and was featured on several best-of-decade lists. Her album Sound Of A Woman topped charts globally and moved over a million units. She has worked with musicians like Skrillex, Diplo, Duran Duran and Joey Bada$$ and more. The Canadian artist has also modeled for some of the world’s most notable brands like Fendi and Maison Birks.

Kelly Tucker: Originally from Los Angeles, I grew up listening to all types of music. My first concert was Aerosmith with Skid Row, then moved on to concerts with Metallica, Lollapalooza, Guns N’ Roses, Soundgarden and more. One of my favorite shows of all time was when I was in college and someone took me to see the Allman Brothers play. I also scalped a ticket to see Pearl Jam and the amazing Eddie Vedder sing his heart out. My professional career started in 2000 at Nielsen Business Media where I was an assistant in a sales department and later got promoted to advertising account executive. When the recession hit in 2008 and the magazine was sold, I took a job at a call center and later got promoted to assistant to the CEO and COO of a global company. In 2017, I took a position at a pharmaceutical agency, and now currently responsible for coordinating meeting logistics for physicians and pharma reps throughout the United States. In my spare time, I work at Peace4Kids a non-profit in South Los Angeles and write screenplays in hopes to make a breakthrough.
