tētēma, the collaborative project between vocalist Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, and electronic-acoustic artist Anthony Pateras, is back with a new album. It’ll be released on Ipecac Records on April 3 and will be called Necroscape. The duo will be joined by musicians Will Guthrie (percussion) and Erkka Veltheim (violin) on the album. This is the second tētēma album, following their debut in 2014 called Geocidal.
In addition to the announcement of a new album, tētēma has released a new single from the album. Called “Haunted on the Uptake,” the song winds and twists its way through a variety of sounds and textures, from gentle ambient to heavier movements. The project is bi-continental, with Patton here in the United States and Pateras operating out of Australia. A press release described the album as one that “synthesizes a lot of territory: odd-time rock, musique concrète, otherworld grooves, soul, industrial noise, microtonal psychoacoustics.” Despite this ambitious undertaking sounding a bit high-concept, it’s a fun anmd heavy listen that’s perfectly encapsulated by “Haunted on the Uptake.”
Recently, Patton gave music from tētēma a live debut, performing at Mona Foma. In other Patton news, he’ll be joining his Faith No More bandmates on the road in Europe this summer, as well as performing with Mr. Bungle for the first time in 20 years for a series of shows in early 2020.
