It has been over a year since talented and beloved rapper Mac Miller died due to an accidental drug overdose, leaving behind an array of what-ifs about his surging music career. Many unanswered questions will remain that way, but fans of the rapper and music-lovers, in general, can rejoice in the first posthumous record by the rapper slated for release on January 17th. “Circles” is classic Miller, with an infectious beat tagging along to the rapper’s relaxed flow. From the vibrant drums to the subtle guitar picking, the song moves along as Miller reflects on his hectic work schedule, his passions, and what can come next. The song grooves as it expands on its sentimental vibe, it feels like a personal message from Miller to listeners, unintended as it is.
Pitchfork reports that Miller’s family opened up about Circles and said the rapper had been working on the record with producer Jon Brion shortly before his death. Miller was staying busy in 2018 as his previous album Swimming had released that summer. This upcoming posthumous record should offer layers into the rapper’s mind unexplored that will now be looked at under a different light indeed. The video for the song is a space odyssey into the galaxy that was the creative mind of Miller: it is a beautiful tribute to his creativity and voice.
