Evanescence have released a new song and music video for their cover of “The Chain,” from Gears 5, the upcoming fifth installment of the Xbox videogame series Gears of War. This video is directed by P.R. Brown who has worked with the likes of My Chemical Romance, John Mayer and Green Day. “The Chain,” originally appeared on Fleetwood Mac’s acclaimed 1977 album Rumours.
“The goal of the video is to show the bond of this band as they deliver a powerful take on a classic song. The tie in with Gears 5 presented an opportunity to combine the game world together with the band performance in a post-apocalyptic setting,” Brown explained in a press release regarding the music video. “The band emerges from the ashes to come together. We wanted to bring these worlds together and feel both the force of the band and the game.”
“The Chain (From Gears 5)” features the band’s signature alternative rock sound, with anthemic guitar chords, an upbeat drum tempo and a string orchestra, blended with the band’s singer Amy Lee’s passionate vocal delivery. This video shows the band performing the song across a red light backdrop, and features eclectic costume choices and changes, with some minor elements of the video game’s trailer added into the video.
“The lyrics make me feel the power of standing together against great forces trying to pull us apart, perhaps even from the inside. I really wanted to drive that home in our version,” Lee elaborated in a press release.
The band had announced last year that they were planning on releasing a studio album this year, which would follow-up from their 2017 release Synthesis. This latest track is one of their first pieces of new music since the release of that album.
