Alternative music legend Alanis Morissette was joined by the cast of the major Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill to perform her classic song “You Oughta Know.” This performance took place on new Years Eve, as part of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest last night to ring in 2020.
“You Oughta Know,” was originally released on her album Jagged Little Pill, which inspired the musical of the same name, which originally opened in 2018. Consequence of Sound points out that many lyrics from Morissette’s original songs were censored for the television broadcast, with seemingly innocent words such as “perverted,” removed.
Jagged Little Pill uses songs throughout Morissette’s career as the basis for its musical numbers, and explores themes such as pain, healing, and empowerment, which were explored in the album it is based on. The album was noted for being a departure from Morissette’s earlier pop/new jack swing inspired sound, and took a more alternative rock/ post-grunge approach to her music.
Morissette is known for her mezzo-soprano voice, and became known throughout the 1990s as one of the leading and pioneering female voices in the alternative rock scene. The performer is set to release her next studio album Such Pretty Forks In The Road next year, which will be her first album release in eight years.
