Encapsulating a look and feel to the past few projects of acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher, has been aided with the musical score superbly at the helm of musicians, Nine Inch Nails’ frontman extraordinaire, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. As previously reported by Pitchfork “Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will rejoin forces with The Social Network director David Fincher to score new movie Mank, Revolver reports. The film, ostensibly a biopic of Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, stars Gary Oldman in the title role and The Souvenir’s Tom Burke as Orson Welles.”
The musical duo of Reznor and Ross collaborating with visually captivating director Fincher, the man behind critically acclaimed thriller 1995’s Seven and 1999’s cult classic Fight Club, began with their first collaboration on the Academy Award-winning 2010’s The Social Network. Their first collaboration proved to be highly successful as The Social Network, chronicling the inspired by true events look behind the creation of the social media networking powerhouse that is Facebook, garnered major accolades receiving a total of three Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Film Editing. Since then Reznor and Ross’ dark electronic-based musical palette has lent its contributions to Fincher’s subsequent films 2011’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and 2014’s Gone Girl.
Ross and Reznor have went on to score other film projects outside of Fincher’s works such as Susanne Bier’s 2018’s Netflix distributed thriller Bird Box and actor Jonah Hill’s 2018 directorial debut period piece, Mid90s. Reznor as of late has been critically vocal behind his disappointment with one particular film project him and Ross contributed to. As previously reported in the aforementioned Pitchfork article, Reznor will incorporate sounds faithful to the forthcoming Fincher period piece Mank “Honoring the 1940s mis-en-scene, Reznor and Ross will use instruments authentic to the time, Reznor told Revolver. ‘We’re not gonna be using the modular synthesizer on that one,’ he said. ‘We think we’re gonna be period authentic, so it just creates a new set of challenges.’ In the same issue, which arrives on newsstands December 31, Reznor called scoring Bird Box ‘fucking waste of time.'”
