Legendary thrash metal legends Slayer and English pop duo Wham! may not have a lot of similarities on the surface, however this hasn’t stopped YouTuber Andy Rehfeldt from bringing the two artists together in a recent mash-up. Rehfeldt brought the instrumental from Wham’s 1984 holiday classic “Last Christmas” with Slayer singer Tom Araya’s vocals from “Angel of Death,” a track from hteir 1986 album Reign In Blood, blended together with his own instrumentals for the new mash-up.
Araya’s grotesque lyrics, referencing the holocaust, are blended in with Wham’s poppy instrumental during the first part of the track, before they are joined by heavy bass breakdowns giving in a thrash element. Jingle bells and xylophones are added into the instrumental giving it a more holiday feel, while the end of the track brings in a bit of Wham’s vocals before closing out with Araya’s themes.
Slayer’s manager declared last month that it will be unlikely for the band to continue touring in the future. The band’s final leg of their farewell tour wrapped up in Los Angeles on November 30, in an event that brought out reactions from many notable members of the metal community, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and Scott Ian of Anthrax.
“They’ve been doing this for so long. They just said, ‘OK, this is enough,’” the band’s manager Rick Sales told the Los Angeles Times. “My analogy is Jerry Seinfeld, who had probably the biggest TV show when he went out on top. I respect the band for the decision. If you’re going to do it, this is the way.”
