The Grammy Awards have announced next year’s recipients of its Lifetime Achievement Awards, which will go to punk icon Iggy Pop, hip hop collective Public Enemy, rock band Chicago, country/folk singer John Prine, singer Roberta Flack, soul legend Isaac Hayes, and influential blues guitar player Sister Rosetta Tharpe. This upcoming ceremony will take place April 18, 2020, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The Grammmy Lifetime Achievement Award is given to “performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.” The very first recipient of this award was singer Bing Crosby, while the most recent winners were Black Sabbath, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Billy Eckstine, Donny Hathaway, Julio Iglesias, Sam & Dave and Dionne Warwick.
Iggy Pop began his career in 1967 as a member of the influential proto-punk band The Stooges, who helped create the foundations of many punk and garage rock elements. The performer has also maintained an extensive solo career, delving into genres such as glam rock and hard rock. His most recent album release Free debuted earlier this year.
“The issues Free runs into lies with the way the album was created.,” mxdwn reviewer Arnim Whisler explained. “Pop claims it just ‘sort of happened,’ and at times it does feel rushed. The ideas have potential, but they could have done with a little more time and development. Ultimately, Pop’s fans will enjoy it, but he hasn’t outdone himself on this one.”
Prine had recently suspended several of his upcoming tour dates due to surgery.
