Red Hot Chili Peppers announced guitarist John Frusciante is making his return to the band. The announcement also declares former guitarist Josh Klinghoffer’s departure, CNN reports.
The band revealed the news on Sunday in an Instagram post. “The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past 10 years, Josh Klinghoffer,” the band wrote. “Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us. We also announce, with great excitement and full hearts, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group.”
Frusciante joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the age of eighteen. His first Red Hot Chili Peppers appearance debuted in 1988’s album, Mother’s Milk, after the death of guitarist Hillel Slovak. Following the popularity of 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Frusciante decided to have a break and quit in 1992. Frusciante was struggling with drug addiction before his reunion in 1998. From there, the band released the album Californication in 1999 and By the Way in 2002 and Stadium Arcadium in 2006. In September 2009, Frusciante released his solo album, The Empyrean, announcing his split with Red Hot Chili Peppers. In 2016’s charity music concert, Frusciante rejoined the band with Anthony Kiedis and Flea for a performance.
Klinghoffer, as the band’s backup touring guitarist at that time, took over the lead guitar duties after Frusciante’s departure, until this year. As a long-term piece in Red Hot Chili Peppers, Klinghoffer contributed the two most recent studio albums, 2011’s I’m With You and 2016’s The Getaway.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have confirmed two headlining shows in the U.S., which includes Alabama’s Hangout Festival on May 15th at Gulf Shores, and the Boston Calling fest on May 24th.
