The annual Norwegian music festival, Øyafestivalen, has recently announced their illustrious 2020 musical lineup that includes Bikini Kill, FKA Twigs, Suede and more. According to Music Festival Wizard, “Øya Festival is the largest outdoor festival in Norway, taking place on the east side Oslo at the beautiful Tøyenparken. 60,000 festies are drawn in every August for four days of a wonderfully curated international lineup that pulls in some heavy hitters as headliners. Øya Festival also prides itself on its sustainability and their groundbreaking green initiatives.”
The festivals origins date back to 1999, to which the festival having just recently celebrating its 20 year anniversary. According to the Oya Festival‘s official website, “…Norway’s Øya Festival will be returning to Oslo once again from 11th – 15th August 2020. Known for its uncompromisingly credible 50/50 M/F line up and regularly voted the world’s greenest event, Øya paves the way for forward-thinking next-generation festivals.” As of November 5th Bon Iver and Bikini Kill were announced amongst the headliners of Oya Festival 2020. As previously reported, “The nom de band of Justin Vernon, Bon Iver became the poster child for the late-2000s indie folk sound following the 2007 release of the heart wrenching confessional album For Emma, Forever Ago. In the twelve years that have ensued, Vernon has amassed multiple Grammy Awards, millions of fans – including collaborator Kanye West – hosted two festivals and much more. Following the release of his majestic fourth album, I, I this summer, Bon Iver will return to Oslo for what will be one of few European festival performances next year.”
For the Olympia, Washington-based radical feminist group Bikini Kill the announcement of their inclusion to the forthcoming year’s Oya Festival is a momentously celebrated event marking their reunion since their break up back in 1997. The iconic punk band Bikini Kill, “Widely credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90s through their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live show, Bikini Kill used touring as a way to create an underground network of women and a powerful forum for female voices to be heard. Their reunion tour, which saw them play shows in New York, LA and London earlier this year, proved that their demand of ‘revolution girl style, now’ is very much alive in the present.”
Other names that make up the already impressively stacked lineup include: Aurora, FKA Twigs, Suede, Emilie Nicolas, Michael Kiwanuka, Kvelertak, Sondre Lerche amongst a slew of young upcoming burgeoning musical talents.
