Singer/songwriter Kesha has just released an emotionally liberating single aptly titled “Resentment” track that has an impressive array of musical talent featuring the likes of country singer Sturgill Simpson, famed singer/producer/co-founder of The Beach Boys Brian Wilson and New York-based pop songwriter Wrabel. Kesha is another multi-talented artist that is quickly adding arsenal to a very successful and powerful new year in 2020 releasing her upcoming fourth studio album High Road a follow up to 2017’s Rainbow. According to a press release, the track “Resentment” was initially “…written by Wrabel, Madi Diaz, and Jamie Floyd, with co-writing from Kesha and production by John Hill, “Resentment” is a touching, country-tinged reflection on being done wrong by a lover and holding onto that negativity. Additional music will be added to the much-anticipated new album, which will now be released January 31 via Kemosabe/RCA Records. January will also find Kesha announcing a nationwide headlining US tour as well as appearing as both a performer and chat guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
The video for “Resentment” is an intimately vulnerable look at the artist Kesha, whose legal battles and personal struggles overshadowed the last few tumultuous years of her career, turning a new leaf and forging a fierce musical comeback of sorts. Continuing on with a more mature, country-tinged musical stylings that were featured on her last studio album, High Road marks a reinvigorating path that Kesha seems ready for.
The video as previously noted in the aforementioned press release was “…recorded on her iPhone 11 Pro that compliments the raw emotion of the song.” Kesha appears emotionally distraught lying in what looks to be a hotel bed. The backing vocals from the featured artists compliments and blends richly with the earnestly recorded vocals of Kesha’s giving it an emotional enthralling listen. Even as she looks longingly at her reflection in the adjacent bathroom mirror or when she finally turns the drapes to let sunshine in, her visible pain and anguish from her voice lingers long after the song ends.
Kesha speaking on the genesis of the track and her dream collaboration with all the parties involved is as follows:
“‘resentment is such a powerful and destructive emotion and in my experience is more complex than hate or anger,’ while of the collaborators on the song she said ‘Brian Wilson is one of my personal musical heroes, so when he said he would collaborate with me on the recording…that moment was one of the most exciting in my career. Then add in Sturgill who I respect and admire so much, as well as my close friend the insanely talented songwriter Wrabel, and this record felt more like a dream than just another song to me.'”
