A young fearless singer battles her 20’s
Greta Kline, better known as Frankie Cosmos, has created a musical name for herself very early on in her career (literally and figuratively considering she is on band name number eight). The 25-year old singer-songwriter released her first studio album, Zentropy, in 2014. Now, in 2019, the singer has released her fourth studio LP titled Close It Quietly, an album dedicated to figuring out the twisted period in our lives called our middle 20’s. Throughout her career, Kline has been known for her brilliant and insightful lyricism and colorful enthusiasm for life. In Close It Quietly, Kline takes the time to let her heart guide the listener through the inner workings of her mind.
One thing that continues to be a trend throughout the indie-pop musician’s albums is the amount of music she produces at one time. On her 2016 release, Next Thing, the singer included 15 tracks and on her 2018 release, Vessel, there were 18 original tracks. Now on Close It Quietly, the artist lets her musical talent shine through 21 songs. Through each of the seemingly short tracks, the singer approaches topics of all kinds. The first half of the album includes songs like the pop-centric and easily catchy “Rings (On a Tree)” and the melodic synth wonderland that is “Windows.”
One of the standout tracks on Close It Quietly is “With Great Purpose” where Kline is accompanied by her father, actor Kevin Kline, on piano and her mother, Phoebe Cates, on acoustic guitar. The two women singing harmony over the quiet and subtle tone of the song can leave the listener feeling blissfully at ease. Another standout on Close It Quietly is “A Joke,” a track where we find Kline at her most dynamic but cautious all at once. Though “Self-destruct” and “Trunk Of A Tree” are both less than a minute, they connect the listener to the next track and through the story in Kline’s mind.
Though Close it Quietly can be a bit daunting with its 21-track list, each track is no longer than two minutes and 50 seconds which makes the album an easy listen through from start to finish. Frankie Cosmos is no stranger to her age being the star of the show, it is something to say though that this young 25-year-old singer song-writer is doing it all her way.
