mxdwn PREMIERE: Church Girls Release Dazzling New Punk Anthem “Could’ve Been”

Earlier this year Philadelphia punk band Church Girls released an EP called Cycles, which was a short but sweet showcase of their well-balanced blend of post-punk and indie rock. Now they’re releasing a new full-length in 2020 called The Haunt. Today we’re excited to premiere its dynamic first single, “Could’ve Been.” The track picks up right where the quartet left off with their EP, with open strummed guitar chords, emotive singing from Mariel Beaumont and plenty of moments for live fists-to-the-sky singalong moments.

Much like the subject matter of their previous release, “Could’ve Been” is a song that addresses addiction in very personal and real terms. We premiered song called “Cycles” from the EP, a song that’s about cycle of conflict and forgiveness when you’re in a relationship with an addict.

“‘Could’ve Been’ is about watching someone you care about self-destruct through addiction,” said Beaumont. “Although it’s about someone else, it’s a relatable feeling. I often feel guilty about not expressing gratitude for everything I have or living to my full potential.”

Joining Beaumont in Church Girls are Joseph Wright (guitars, vocals, piano), Vince Vullo (bass, vocals) and Julien Varnier (drums, vocals). The Haunt is out on February 7, 2020 on Chatterbot Records. According to a Facebook post from the band earlier this week, they wrote, threw away and then rewrote the album to come up The Haunt.
