The Flaming Lips band members Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd have teamed up with the Los Angeles rock duo Deap Vally for the supergroup named Deap Lips, and have announced a self-titled album, which will be released on March 13 via Cooking Vinyl. The group have also debuted a new song entitled “Hope Hell High.”
“Hope Hell High,” begins with acoustic guitar chords, complimented by Deap Vally’s vocals, and begins with a stripped down style before the instrumentation develops. As the song progresses, The Flaming Lips unique psychedelic pop with gorgeous string arrangements with eclectic electronic and synth sounds laid on top of the track’s instrumentals.
Coyne teased a possible collaboration with Deap Vally earlier this year with a post on Instagram. Other artists who have collaborated with The Flaming Lips in the past include Miley Cyrus for the album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, Neon Indian for The Flaming Lips 2011 #2: The Flaming Lips with Neon Indian and Stardeath & White Dwarf for the album The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon.
“The band’s most recent album release King’s Mouth debuted earlier this year. “The Flaming Lips have orchestrated an album that summons all the artistic brilliance of their past and reminds us why their act has remained innovative for decades,” mxdwn reviewer Rene Cobar explained. “All previous follies aside, The Flaming Lips will go down in history as a group unconcerned with the world around them, not in a malicious way but in a spiritually free manner.”
