On Dec. 4, Colombian-American singer and song writer, Karly-Marina Loaiza, better known as Kali Uchis, released her new single “Solita”. The bilingual artist emotionally sang about conquering her demons alone, and portrayed her pain through lyrics in English and Spanish.
The song begins with an 80s sounding synth as Uchis hums a mysterious tune. The beat floats in as she sings the first part of the verse in Spanish. The transition from Spanish to English is unbroken, and the entire temperature of the song changes as she makes her way into the chorus.
“Solita, Solita,” she sings continuously. “Bailando aquí sola como a mi me gusta.”
The hip hop influence is evident after the first chorus, and the incorporation with Spanish lyrics exemplifies the message and sensations she is pushing. The beats and synth transition from heavy to soft, and from soft to heavy.
“I’d rather dance alone than with the devil,” said Uchis. “This song is about healing, freedom and embracing the mixed emotions that come with that.”
Uchis recently released her debut album, Isolation, in Apr. 2018. The album featured 15 song, featuring artists such as Tyler the Creator, Jorja Smith, and the Gorillaz. She also collaborated on the song “Time”, released in Jun. 2019, with late American rapper, Mac Miller, and Free Nationals. The debut of this song marked the first posthumous release by Mac Miller.
Uchis is set to perform on Apr. 3, 2020, at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, in São Paulo, Brazil.
