It has been announced that four unearthed songs by Pixies dating from 1987-1991 will finally be made available on all digital streaming platforms. The songs “Dig For Fire (Albini Version)”, “Go Man Go”, “Brackish Boy” and “Punk Loop” were previously only available across two bonus 7” singles included in Dinked International’s limited-edition remastered vinyl pressings of Bossanova and Trompe le Monde, both of which were released last month.
The Steve Albini recording of “Dig For Fire” was recorded in late 1987 during the sessions for Surfer Rosa, and sound far removed from the version they released almost 3 years later. “Go Man Go” is a once near-mythical Black Francis and Kim Deal co-write recorded by both Pixies and The Breeders during the album sessions for Bossanova and Last Splash respectively, but failed to make the cut for either record. Outside of appearing on a bootleg tape of Breeders demos and them airing it a few times live at the time, the song faded from view until 2023 when, upon discovering the lost master for it, The Breeders included their version on their 30th anniversary reissue of Last Splash.
As for “Brackish Boy”, it is known more as a Frank Black song as he recorded it again for his eponymous 1993 debut solo album. This early version has been mastered direct from the album session tape and with no post-production. The final song is least conventional track of the four, “Punk Loop”. It was recorded in 1991 during the Trompe le Monde sessions, labelled simply as ‘Punk Loop’ MSTR.
