Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails have released another track for their three-volume long Watchmen soundtrack, which is part of the HBO series based on the Alan Moore graphic novel. The track is new ambient cover of the David Bowie classic “Life On Mars,” which was originally featured on the album Hunky Dory.
Rezor and Ross’ take on “Life On Mars,” is entirely instrumental, as opposed to Bowie’s classic, and replaces the originals glitzy pop feel with a more ambient tone, while retaining its sense of grandeur. The piano line begins with a slightly dark and brooding tone, before it picks up and replaces Bowie’s vocals, before it is joined by a brass section and a full orchestra.
Reznor and Bowie were close friends, with the two collaborating on Bowie’s song “I’m Afraid of Americans,” back in 1997. Bowie even wrote an essay for Reznor, as part of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time back in 2010. Nine Inch Nails also covered Bowie’s “I Can’t Give Everything Away,” back in 2018, which was a song originally bade for the performer’s final album Blackstar.
The duo released the track “The Way It Used To Be,” yesterday, which was also featured on the sountrack for Watchmen. Back in October the two released the full end credits for the series.
Both of the performers are set to compose the score for the Trey Edward Shults film Waves. This film will be the latest in their film score compositions, which has included work for films such as: The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Mid90s and Bird Box.
