Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli has announced his debut solo album entitled Random Desire, which is set to be released via Royal Cream/BMG on February 21. Dulli has also released a new single for the project entitled “Pantomima,” along with a series of spring tour dates for the upcoming year.
“Pantomima” begins with a loud and heavy bassline which is joined by drums, and later a guitar, mixing elements of rock and blues, which are joined by Dulli’s vocals. These vocals contain a mix of sounds, blurring the lines of rock music mixed in with its powerful delivery.
While Dulli handled most of the project’s instrumentation, the album features the help of The Whigs’ guitarist Jon Skibic and multi-instrumentalist Rick G. Nelson, Mathias Schneeberger of Twilight Singers, pedal steel player, upright bassist, and physician Dr. Stephen Patt, and drummer Jon Theodore of Queens of the Stone Age and The Mars Volta.
Dulli released a cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” late last year, which was accompanied by a music video. The Afghan Whigs most recent studio album release In Spades was released back in 2017.
“Is this an album that’ll be played five years from now? No, partially because the varied nature of the songs serves as a weakness and is not a compelling attribute.” mxdwn reviewer Henry Piper explained. “In some cases, an album filled with unique tracks will result in a musical collage of sorts that garners great interest, but here, the effort seems unfocused. A misuse of versatility? Maybe, but time will tell how this work fairs.”
