Rachel Fannan Releases Downtempo Electronic-Pop Song “Wish I Was”

Los Angeles based singer, songwriter, and producer Rachel Fannan just released her latest single “Wish I Was”. This is the third single of 2019 from the former co-lead vocalist for San Fransisco psych-rock band Sleepy Sun, and current vocalist for Canadian band Black Mountain

Fannan displays her elegant voice over spacious and ambient synth progressions in “Wish I Was”, as the slow tempo pace of the song provides the perfect atmosphere for Fannan’s vocals. In the song, Fannan shows her vulnerability, confessing her desire for someone who seems to be unreachable. As Fannan hopes to show strength and resist the urge to fall back for the unreachable, the pulsing beat and poetic lyrics flow effortlessly together, blending to provide the listener with a sense of longing for something that seems hopelessly lost. The melancholic tone is countered with spectacular melodies that draw in the listener, and the combination of the gorgeous melody and doubtful lyrics provide a powerful listening experience.

As a member of Black Mountain, Fannan displays her skills as a rock vocalist, and shows a completely different musical side and vocal ability. The band recently dropped their latest album Destroyer, a vastly different project than Fannan’s single. Unlike the single, Destroyer is a gritty, punk rock sound infused with electric effects and varied approaches to their music. More information about Black Mountain can be found here on their website. Fannan recently played drums with Pussy Riot at Desert Daze in Moreno Beach, California this past October.

Drew Feinerman: I have just completed my senior at the University of Michigan majoring in international studies with an emphasis in political economics and development, with a minor in Chinese language and culture, and I have recently been accepted into the Berklee School of Music's masters of music business program. Although my academic interests include economics, political science, and history, I consider music to be my one true passion. Music is, and has always been, a driving force for the way I think and act every day of my life. I have been playing the tenor saxophone since the age of ten, and playing an instrument at a high level has allowed me to only further my understanding and appreciation for music. While I grew up listening to predominantly classic rock, I soon found myself gravitating toward jazz, hip-hop, funk, and other genres, as my learned to both play and analyze music as a listener. As a writer, I am able to apply my skills both as a musician and a listener, and look forward to the opportunity to being able to express my thoughts on various stories in the music industry.
