Jaakko Eino Kalevi – Dissolution

A short but vivid walk through the singer’s mind

Finnish psych-pop singer-songwriter Jaakko Eino Kalevi is one to create music that will force the listener to dive into realms untouched and think of solar ideas yet to be thought of. The 35-year old continues his work with Weird World Records with his 2019 short release Dissolution. The seven-song album is a breath of fresh air from a man who only knows to look forward to the future. With an over-laying theme of living a well-balanced life, Dissolution is a short but robust musical experiment compared to his last album Out of Touch.

The mini-album is a continuum of the cosmic voyage that Kalevi has been on since the start of his musical career. His ability to be as weird and funky as possible is what continues to bring listeners back time and again. The album opens with a short interlude titled “Out of Touch,” a fitting start to a strange but rounded album. The title track follows with a bass line that could make anyone get up and dance. The track is filled with ’80s inspired drums, keys and guitar that go in and out of tune like a scratchy record player losing its battery power. “Uutiset” takes more of a galactic voyage through the listener’s ears. A bit slower at times, this track is bursting with euphoria. The album ends with “Conceptual Mediterranean (Part 2),” a track that starts off with the sounds of a starry dream that whisks the listener off into an ’80s or ’90s themed movie. As the vocal-less track continues, it plays like an endless kaleidoscope of sounds and movements that remind the listener that Kalevi always keeps his fans on their toes.

Dissolution is a vibrant and ecstatic new journey compared to Out of Touch. The main downside to the singer’s new album is the extremely short playtime. Coming in around 30 minutes, the album is a bit short leaving listeners wanting more. Though Dissolution has a little bit of everything the singer has shown us in the past, it all feels like it fits exactly where it’s supposed to be.
