Don’t trust everything you see, after all, salt looks like sugar. A previous leak indicating the worldwide tour dates of Rage Against the Machine’s 2020 reunion turned out to be a fake announcement. The hoax was plotted by an Australian fan of the American alternative metal band, who later addressed the intention behind the troll.
Confirmed in their twitter, Rage Against the Machine’s five-stops reunion tour will hit the road in the spring of 2020, including two appearances at the 2020 Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival. On November 24, a now-deleted tour flyer was posted by an Instagram account under the name of “rageagainstthemachine”, which says the band would tour internationally throughout 2020. The fake flyer, including five continents Asia, Europe, Australia, South America and North America, immediately excited all the global Rage fans about this highly-anticipated return.
The band members didn’t publicly verify on the worldwide tour dates. However, an Australian-based concert troll is responsible for the fake leak, Metal Injection reports.
Sources updated that the Australian Rage fan misspelled Auckland in the flyer and planned to post the international headlines again. After the troll was unmasked, the Australian Rage fan confessed: it was their wish to see Rage Against the Machine’s concert in Australia that caused the hoax. A statement from the troll reads:
“So, the insta was shopped, the poster isn’t anything amazing but the Insta really sells it. I just changed the post count and time stamp of it haha As far as why [I did it], I mean, I love a good troll hey. Plus how sick would it be if Rage did get their ass down here, and Splendour doesn’t seem too far out of the realm of possibility. Especially as it’s their 20th year.”
Formed in 1991, Rage Against the Machine consists of vocalist Zack de la Rocha, bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello and drummer Brad Wilk. Over the past few years, rumors of a Rage reunion always swirled but never came to fruition. The band were initially active from 1991 to 2000 and again from 2007 to 2011. The upcoming 2020 reunion tour would be Rage Against the Machine’s first tour in 9 years.
While Rage Against the Machine enjoys their return, its bonding rock band Prophets of Rage recently announced their disbandment. Morello, Wilk and Commerford joined forces with Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Cypress Hill’s B-Real and DJ Lord to form the Prophets of Rage in 2016. During their three-year existence, the band only released one studio album Prophets of Rage in 2017.
